Mechanisms of electrochemical magnesium (de)alloying of Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb polymorphs

Different polymorphs of Mg-Sn and Mg-Pb intermetallic compounds were prepared by high-energy mechanical alloying then investigated as active material in magnesium batteries. Beside thermodynamically stable Mg2Sn Mg2Pb crystallizing the anti-fluorite structure, other Mg?2Sn Mg?2Pb increasing ball-milling time. The first dealloying process is almost complete only for cubic polymorphs, similar capacities are observed during subsequent sequences. Thanks to operando X-ray diffraction, electrochemical mechanism revealed shows that tend preferentially form whatever pristine intermetallic. Weak traces alloying, suggesting these act a by-product and/or an intermediate phases process. Finally, compatibility with Mg(TFSI)2-based electrolyte confirmed full cell vs. positive electrode based on Chevrel phase Mo6S8, although limited performance achieved.
